Winterset was featured in an article headlined "A City of Fine Homes."
The reporter extolled the many "elegant residences," in town, "with
paved streets on several principal thoroughfares, with elegantly shaded avenues of
lawns and groves that invite comfort and repose."
The featured homes, valued at $5,000 to $6,000, included the homes of, M.R. TIDRICK'S,
E.E. MCCALL'S, J.H. WINTRODE'S AND C.(Challen) DANFORTH'S.
The reunion of the 39th Iowa was planned to be held in Osceola (Iowa) on the anniversary
of the battle of Allatoona Pass. The killed and wounded from Madison County on that
day amounted to about 30.
