William LUCUS, one of the pioneers of Madison County, died suddenly of heart failure
at his home in the southeast part of the city on Monday morning at 10 o'clock. After
eating a hearty breakfast, he went to the barn to attend to some chores. He returned
to the house about 9:45 and complained of not feeling well and 10 minutes later,
passed peacefully away in his chair.
Born to Mr. & Mrs. Oscar CREGER, of Ohio Township on Monday, December 12th, a
bouncing baby boy. John WORTHING, our jovial townsman, thereby rejoices in the arrival
of another grandson.
George SHAVER, son of Nicholas and Elizabeth SHAVER, was born in Virginia in October
of 1834 and came to Iowa when about 15 years of age. Since that time, he has resided
in South Township, about 5 miles northwest of St. Charles. He united in marriage
with Miss Sarah KEPHART and to this union 2 sons and 8 daughters were born, all of
whom, with their mother, survive. Mr. SHAVER died from consumption on the evening
of December 8th. The funeral was held from the home and burial took place at the
Blair Chapel on December 10th.
Mrs. Charles PURCELL died suddenly at her home north of the square, on Wednesday,
December 7th. She was recovering from an attack of typhoid fever and was supposed
to be well on the road to recovery and the end came as a shock to her relatives.
She leaves a husband and 2 small children. Mr. PURCELL has been dangerously sick
with typhoid also, but is now convalescing.
